We officially opened our comics studio on Australia Day with a big old party, featuring chicken, beer, cookies, art, fun and music! What a great time it was. Hundreds of people were there, spilling out into the street, partying down.

This video will not replace having been there, but you will see a bit of our preparation, Ben making Gocco prints, find out where David gets his drawing materials and there’s a bit of arsecrack if you pause it at just the right time.

First Dog On The Moon takes out 2011 Political Cartooning Award

Every year is a good year for political cartoonists, but 2011 was a particularly dramatic one.

Or maybe it just seems that way.

Curator of the yearly Behind the Lines cartoon exhibition at Old Parliament House Guy Hansen has been doing the job for so long that every year looks like a boon for the country’s visual satirists.

”I’ve been doing this exhibition on and off for 15 years, under different names and at different locations, and every year, I seem to think, ‘this is really the most dramatic year’,” he said.

”But this year really was quite unique because of, perhaps, the significance of some of the policy issues being debated, combined with the fierceness of the rhetoric.”

The show opened at the Museum of Australian Democracy last night with Andrew Marlton, cartoonist for Crikey.com and creator of First Dog on the Moon being named the winner of the 2011 Political Cartooning Award.

ACA President Jason Chatfield talks about the $2Million comic book auction on ABC 720.

Next week in Beverly Hills, several million dollars will be spent buying the pen-and-ink artwork behind the comics we love. Including some classic Batman art, and some Jack Kirby inks. Check out a gallery of the artwork that’s for sale — with suggested bids totaling around $2 million.

Comic book art has firmly entrenched itself in the world of fine art, with a page from Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns selling for half a million dollars earlier this year — and Leonardo DiCaprio and Steven Spielberg were rumored to have been bidders.

Heritage Auctions’ highlights for the three day event (which will be will be streamed live on the 15th through 17th). And bits for art from the collection of Jerry Robinson, the classic Batman artist who created the Joker and Penguin, have already surpassed the $200,000 mark, with a week to go.
